ALLEGRO!

Allegro! is a replacement text for our second book, Encore!, which was published in 1997 and has become outdated. At that time word processing was the only area taught, but today Information Management/Technology encompasses a wide number of areas. To meet this need Allegro! has been written to follow on from Pronto! which is already being used at Year 10, and to be used in conjunction with Panache! and Presto!

Throughout Allegro! there is reference to downloading files for use in tasks from our website here. This is a practical way for students to learn how to download files and use them within their own documents. If students do not have access to the Internet then we suggest the files be downloaded and stored on the school network server for use by students.

Allegro! also contains a unit of thematic assessments to cover Achievement Standards 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 of NCEA Information Management.

PANACHE!

Panache!, our most recent publication, has been designed to be used alongside Allegro! and Presto!.

The first half of Panache! covers graphic design. These units are suitable for students studying NCEA Achievement Standard 1.7.

The second half of Panache! has been arranged into six areas covering the following external Standards:

  • Achievement Standard 90035 (Manage information)
  • Achievement Standard 90034 (Communicate information)
  • Achievement Standard Exam Practice 90036, 90035 and 90034
  • Unit Standard 18743 (Produce and use a spreadsheet)
  • Unit Standard 2792 (Graphic documents using templates)
  • Unit Standard 18734 (Web homepage using a template)

Throughout Panache! there is reference to downloading files for use in tasks from our website here.

PRESTO!

The tasks in Presto! are all written in a thematic style, and each task relates to one of the Achievement Standards in NCEA Information Management. The themes have been grouped in different areas to form units. Most teachers will choose to use Presto! in conjunction with Allegro!, Panache! or Viva!, to ensure a complete coverage of the course.

Several themes can be found in each of the following units:

  • Family and festivities
  • Entertainment
  • Health and safety
  • School activities
  • Recreation
  • Travel
  • New Zealand
  • Food and dining
  • Animals and nature
  • Miscellaneous
Presto! is designed to reinforce the knowledge and skills already learned from Allegro! and Viva!, and to extend the students' understanding of Information Management.

We recommend that students do not work through the book from cover to cover. Teachers should select themes which feature tasks that the students have covered and are able to complete.

VIVA!

The material in Viva! has been written to provide a resource of straightforward instructions and practice tasks in the non-word processing areas of computer applications. These include:

  • Desktop publishing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Presentations
  • Internet
We recommend that students work through the skills sections first, which feature tasks that are graded in order of difficulty, before attempting the thematic assignments at the end of the book - these tie together the various types of application.

To use Viva! effectively, students will need some basic file management skills, such as the ability to save files, retrieve them, and print them out.

ALLEGRO! HOMEWORK BOOK

Allegro! Homework Book for Year 11 is a new concept in Information Management.

The book is a write-on publication designed for students to use at home, and reinforces the skills and understanding of Information Management work covered in Allegro! or any other Year 11 resource. Students do not need to use Allegro! in order to benefit from the book as there is no reference to Allegro! in the homework book. A computer at home is not necessary in order to complete the tasks.

Using a write-on book like Allegro! Homework Book for Year 11 is the ideal way in which schools can meet parents' expectations of regular, organised homework.
